You can truly connect with every character. But there was never fan service, no overly gory violence. I watched all 74 episodes expecting something, -anything- to go horribly wrong, waiting for it to fall into the tripe I had watched hundreds of other anime go into. Germany looked like Germany and not some twisted version of Japan. The language spoken was honest and like something I could hear on the street. The background music always fit the scenes and was never overbearing. The opening theme song wasn't some annoying pop song that grated on my ears and made me snicker. But the show started, and the art was realistic for an anime-something I hadn't quite experienced before. I kept expecting something to be horrible. Someone on a forum suggested Monster, so I looked it up and watched it. I had just finished watching Moribito - which was one I truly liked because the characters didn't follow normal anime standards - and was searching for something to follow up after that. Monster blows everything I've ever seen out of the water. I don't mind watching most series, but I always hold myself back from really truly liking most of them - I watch, say, Fullmetal Alchemist, and I get some visceral joy from it, I cry a little bit, but I wouldn't call it a favorite I find Cowboy Bebop enjoyable, but I wouldn't ever watch it ten times. I've always been very picky about my anime. Little did he know, that this is only the beginning of a terrifying journey through countries, buried secrets and the dark depths of the human psyche. He goes into hiding and vows to find the twins and prove his innocence. Tenma, having no alibi and the only one with motive, is the prime murder suspect.

His downward spiral begins when one night, while he is out cold in a drunken stupor, the twins vanish from the hospital and Tenma's superiors - along with the hospital director - are found dead. The boy survives, leaving Tenma's career in ruins, his engagement to his fiancé broken. He decides that 'all life is equal' and goes against his superiors to save the boy's life (who arrived first), which ultimately results in the mayor's death. He is faced with a huge dilemma when his superior orders him to abort the boy's surgery and operate on the mayor instead, who was brought in much later.

But one day his bright future changes when a little boy is brought in with a serious head injury, along with his twin sister, the aftermath of a family massacre. He is respected by his superiors for his incredible surgical skills, envied by his peers and he is engaged to the daughter of the hospital director. Kenzo Tenma, a young but extremely talented neurosurgeon, lives his life working in a hospital in Germany.
